Avaya Service Call
This was a service call to repair a Avaya Office 500
The Doorking 1812 Classic at the driveway wasn't ringing into the unit. The first thing to do on a call like this is to tone the wires to the source to see if they have continuity

Telephone Entry
As it turns out it was the right thing to do. Lucky for me there are four pairs of wires to choose from in a Cat5e, because only one pair had continuity and it was the last pair I tested. Something terrible happened to that cable sometime in the past. Maybe a Rat somewhere. Maybe the original installer had pulled too hard on the cable when running it. That will cause a catastrophic failure in the future for sure. I've seen rats chew through all four pairs with a couple well placed bites and an awful big rat. The other Door Phone was wired to pins four and five but both door phones were going to a telephone extension that was programmed to be a ring down extension. A ring down extension is a telephone extension on a telephone system pre programmed to ring a specific group of or a single phone and will only call those phones simply by going off hook. Now it finally comes out that there had been three or four other system techs there and none of them had been able to fix the problem yet. I wired the door phone to pins one and two, programmed the DoorKing to phone mode and call forward, then programmed it to go off hook and dial 1 digit. The one digit is to trick the DoorKing to go off hook .

Ring Ring and answer, I Fixed it! So after a bunch of other guys who didn't know what they were doing, had tried to fix it, screwed up the wiring, and programming, lucky they didn't damage the unit. Problem is a lot of Doorking guys only know one way to setup and program the unit and have no Idea what the other more advanced configuration are for or do.
